I teach philosophy at Villanova University, in Villanova, Pennsylvania. My research focuses on the consequences of the technologies and sciences of life and mind on our self-conception as conscious, free, and morally responsible selves, with particular interest in the status and possibility of fully democratic cultures.
I have published several articles on philosophy of mind, philosophy of science and technology, the history of philosophy, and ethics. I have also spoken throughout the United States and Europe. In 2015, I was the keynote speaker at the John Dewey and Cognitive Science conference at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.
I am a native of western Pennsylvania and have taught at several of its schools, including Allegheny College (where I earned my BA), and Mercyhurst University. I have also taught at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (where I earned my graduate degrees, studying at the Center for John Dewey Studies), Bowie State University, Case Western Reserve University, Westminster College, and Susquehanna University.
